Tips and Tricks Of Filming In The Dark

Postmodernism Essay

Postmodernism: is a late 20th-century styled and concept in the arts, architecture, and criticism, which represents a departure from modernism and is characterized by the self-conscious use of earlier styles and conventions, a mixing of different artistic styles and media and a general distrust of theories.

Postmodernism allows media to create something new by mixing old things together and being creative about it.
It allows media to recreate a new memory with a modern idea. for exmaple:
'Slumdog Millionaire' made in 2008 by Danny Boyle is a mixture of romance, game show, bollywood and  drama. The mixture of different genres allows the film to be classified as a postmodern text as it crosses the boundary of films only being labelled as one genre. As  Danny Boyle said 'why? why limit a film to one set of emotions when it has the potential to explore so much more? The idea of a postmodern text is to challenge the fact that movie are only section to one type of genre instead of experimenting and creating something completely new for the audience to be exposed to. Another example of a postmodern text is 'Warm Bodies'. It is a mixture of romance, zombie and comedy also making it a postmodern text. postmodern texts allows media to be able to create something completely new and original in the films context. It allows the film makers to challenge the conventions of the type of the genres they are working with make something new in order to be creative and original to entertain their target audiences and maybe their niche audiences as well. 'Sweeney Todd' is also a postmodern text made in 2007 by Tim Burton as it a mixture of drama, horror, musical and thriller.

Black Eyeballs For The Possession

  • As Gelsomina is going to be possessed in the trailer, we were thinking of making her eyes completely black to portray her inner demon taking control over her as one of the supernatural convention.
  • This is one of the tutorials that I found that teaches you how to do so.

    Characters Make-up Construction

    Make-up Turtorial Research

    • This make-up tutorial will help us do the scratched on one of characters (GELSOMINA'S) arms when she is taken away.
    • It's 3 deep scratches on her arm. we are trying to make it look as realistic as possible as it will be a close up shot.
    • The way she makes the deep cut is quick and simple making it convenient for us with our shooting schedule.

    Dystopian Analysis

    World war z:

    • Its a dystopian film as it has a dystopian plot of the zombie apocalypse attacking the world. There is a deadly virus happening where it infects humans making them turn into a zombie in 10 seconds.
    • It is also dystopian as there is no cure for the zombie infection.
    • There are less and less humans and more zombies as the movies goes on.
    • Sound attracts the zombies and it is practically impossible for humans to stay quiet.
    • They find a cure but unfortunately the cure is getting sick so the zombies do not smell the fresh human blood.
    • It has a dystopian location as it is set in the heart of the cities creating an isolated feeling and no escape for the humans. Depriving them of hope.
    Skyline:

    • Skyline line is dystopian because there is an alien abduction and the humans are not able to do anything about it.
    • It takes in the energy city into the ships and use their brains as a fuel to function
    • In the film the humans are made vulnerable taking their hope away from them this means that the human population is in danger as they are not able to do anything about the adduction.
    • The props- spaceships are huge making the human look useless and have no fight left for human kind to survive.

    Mood Board

    • I have made this mood board for our supernatural thriller trailer.
    • The red bow is to represent the girl the goes missing ;she has a red bow and that is found when her friend is trying to find her as a hint that she has been in that area.
    • The torn up black and white dirty material is to symbolize the Gothic girl that has gone missing and it also portrays a message that something chaotic has happened to her.
    • The red scratch is to symbolize that the girl that went missing was struggling and fighting against whatever was taking her away.
    • I painted the mood board black and very dark to represent the genre.

    Horror Film Trailers Analysis

In class we analysed the trailer: 'Amytiville: The awakening'

    we analysed it like so:

CAM SAMC: there were a lot of close up and mid shots so that the mood could continue to be suspenseful and reach climatic points. The camera movement were slow and steady at first to show an illusion that it was another type of genre.

Editing: The titles had animation to add a creeping up affect to it.   Plethora of transitions (fade to black) which fastens the pace of the trailer

Light: The lighting was mostly medium tone or low key lighting even at the bit where the trailer is portraying itself as a dramatic genre.

Codes and Conventions: Examples in the trailer such as the curtain moving and dolls are typical conventions of a horror and it is the mystery of the unknown.

Representation: In this particular trailer, the main character is not represented as being innocent through MES (costume being black) but is later on represented this way when her costume changes and she becomes a victim.

Audience: I would believe this trailer to be a 15 for both male and female but would also appeal to 24-35 age range

Institution: The film has been produced by the producer of Paranormal Activity, Insidious and Sinister which accesses an inherited audience from audiences who enjoyed this film. It would also appeal to audiences who like the producer. It was distributed by Dimension Films which has a lot of involvement in Horror films so audiences would feel satisfied in that they are able to deliver a Horror based film
